Keeps her long dark locks all bound up and out of the way on duty. Smells of the herbs she cares for everyday. Dirty, short nails from her work with plants. Wears a pendant, a stone that has a pale blue shine. It is a telepaticly imprinted 'encyclopedia' of the Vorinn. On her left hand is a pale set of fluid markings made of a curious kind of reflective light ink. It's not as obvious as most tattoo ink and can go wholly unnoticed without looking closely. The rune-like markings are Ancient Etraennaian and mean Care, Self-Control, and Self-Sacrifice. She has a similar circlet design around her upper left arm made of Etraennaian script that says Peace, Hope, Mercy. |

| General Overview | Ibis has transformed over the years, beginning as a carefree and awkward teen and being helped to develop by friends and mentors in her time with the crew of the Nimitz and Sojourner. She was trained extensively by Commander deVos and his scientists and also guided by many other superior officers. Although she still believes in hopefulness, she is not quite so naive any longer. She is learning to readjust to her newly gained perspectives and see her universe a little more clearly. | |
| Strengths & Weaknesses | Heart- Ibis is all heart, generally speaking. She tries to identify with others and strives to understand them. She has good people skills and makes far more friends than enemies. It's a strength in many instances, but often a vulnerability as well. Telepathy- Ibis has grown a better control of her telepathy so that is is more often a tool and less often a liability. Creativity- Ibis likes to ponder around things and to play with everything. She can come up with many imaginative ideas although they may or may not be helpful. Sometimes they are just the key to the problem at hand, other times her creative mind only leads her to distraction. She can miss the obvious while she's pondering circles around it. Sciences- She's gifted with working with plant life and has good general science training. General training- Ibis is a qualified shuttle pilot. She is training to be an expert at sensors and her astrometrics knowledge makes her a decent navigator when needed. Ibis has some basic understanding of physical sciences that make her decent at assisting engineers and operations officers, although not with their more in depth systems knowledge. She's familiar with the basic tools. Ibis keeps up with a regular PT and has basic training on phasers and rifles. |
|
| Ambitions | Ibis would like to continue her career in starfleet as it has provided her all manner of excellent opportunities in science and in her life experience. After a run in with the Prime Directive, she began a project called "Mercy Directive" to organize citizens to push for an amendment to the Prime Directive for reasonable low impact humanitarian aid provision. She is a founding member and remains on its board in an honorary position. She doesn't really run it however, having turned it over to similar minded people, some of whom she met on one of her internships and has worked with in the past. |
|
| Hobbies & Interests | Ibis used to love quiet hobbies and still keeps a sketch diary and daydreams. But now she is more interested in the world around her and spends more time with fellow crew members. She's always up for learning a new game, and is particularly a lover of the outdoors. When on tour, she makes up for it now by using the holodeck or spending time in Astrometrics, imagining the display over head to be the night sky. She has limited musical abilities. She used to love adventure holodeck games. She can still be talked into one with friends, but aside from some one-on-one battle projections and racer gaming, she mostly finds that life fulfills all her needs for wild and crazy adventures anymore. She's also learned to dance and to distil her own wine. |
| Personal History | Ibis grew up a carefree child, the youngest of six and the only daughter to Betazoid parents. She was born on Betazed but her parents relocated to Earth while she was still an infant, and so she grew up primarily with humans. She spent her childhood mostly in play-acting and trivial amusements. She was a silly and clumsy child, but very happy. Her father is an executive (one of numerous VPs) in a very big company of which Ibis understands very little. He travels often interplanetarily and represents the Earth, NYC office of his corporation. Her mother is a Betazoid "social butterfly" who changes her hairstyle twice a week and keeps up with the ever changing Betazed fashion; she is going through the Betazoid "menopause" they are so infamous for. She spends much of her time in social functions, particularly among other Betazoids on Earth. She has a prejudice for telepaths over non-telepaths; she thinks of it more as a pity for their handicap of non-telepathy. One of Prinella Xeri's most difficult misfortunes is the loss of her family's title three generations ago. She has no title to pass on to her only daughter and considers that shameful. Prinella's biggest concern in life is marrying her only daughter off to someone as handsome and successful as her own charming husband (who she boasts of having stolen from the arms of another woman and proposed to herself in her younger years) but preferably one with family connections to make up for the lost family titles. Prinella is a first chair violinist in a NYC orchestra and can play many other instruments. Thanks to this influence (and a great deal of music lessons) Ibis has a passing ability to play flute and cello. Ibis' brothers live mostly on Betazed (where they grew up most of their lives before she was born), save for Arrice who is the second youngest and has also been raised primarily on Earth, and, whom she has had somewhat of a (loving) sibling rivalry with growing up. Part of the animosity is the fact that (thanks to their family telepathy) the sons are all aware that their mother was never really satisfied with boys and kept trying for a daughter to satisfy her social status. The oldest sons have managed to accept, smile and move on into the reality of gender equality in the 24th century, but Arrice is still suffering from considering himself 2nd rate to his sister in his mother's eyes. Yedrin loves Arrice, but finds his grown son's parasitical reliance on the family money quite unacceptable. He continues to try to get Arrice into various work, for which he just won't measure up to, mostly thanks to his attitude. Ibis loves her family but thinks they don't understand her. All of them are used to living in Betazoid society where nothing is personal and no one is embarrassed, But she has grown up with non telepathic human children, and so has developed a keener sense of what is "personal" to her. Her family treads all over this sensitivity and often reads into her imaginings only to ridicule and scrutinize, as any open minded Betazoid is wont to do with another. Her education was in the very finest private schools at first but when her parents sensed how sad she was at the regimented schooling and haughty classmates, they decided to allow her to attend the public schools. Years later they were quite shocked at her insistence on joining the military. But Ibis had dreams of traveling the galaxy and becoming a famous xeno-botanist (she'd seen one on a HoloVid, hacking through a wild jungle on some distant planet and it looked so exciting!) So while her friends were all looking for universities, Ibis decided she couldn't stand one more minute of formal lectures and boring tests- She was off to see the galaxy for herself! Ibis had a difficult time at boot. She struggled to keep focused and complete the exercises. She had just passing marks in her physical training, but scored well otherwise. She got along fine with most of the people she met there, and was sad to see a few fail, drop, or leave for different reasons. Seeing that the heat was really on made her focus harder and be more determined to apply herself. She didn't join Starfleet in some misguided contest to be the best anyway, and only looked forward to new experiences. She was not disappointed. In her time on the Nimitz, Ibis was thrown fully into gaining new skills and being able to manage for herself or work well on a team. Her Department Head, Commander deVos, invested a lot of time and training in the girl and gave her as many varied experiences in the sciences as possible, which rounded her out as a science officer and made her more versatile as a crewmember, but her love of botany and horticulture remained the most interesting to her. Ibis spent 3 months on an internship in the Maxima Sector for Daystrom Institute, working with the mentors of her Department Head. The experience was intense, packed to the gills with things to learn and learn fast and Ibis rose to the challenge. While there, she got involved in an underground project to save a pre-warp world from starvation. She developed better staple crops to resist pestilence and produce a better yield in a shorter growing season. She was later very nearly court-martialed for flying in the face of the Prime Directive, but thanks to poor evidence handling, the prosecution's eagerness to put away the leaders of the effort, and a very excellent brief written by her attorney, Ibis was let off without possibility of re-trial. Ibis continues to work on a personal project educating and advocating for a more compassionate policy addendum to the Prime Directive that would take more consideration in humanitarian relief, or at least towards legalizing it for volunteers. She calls her effort the "Mercy Directive" and has started a subspace net based resource group where like-minded individuals organize ideas and petition their planetary and local governing bodies to affect policy in the UFP. It holds peaceful educational forums and helps form citizen lobbying groups. Mostly Ibis does very little of the over all organization any longer, although her name is closely associated with the Mercy Directive still for her spark and momentary limelight that produced the group. There are many working against the Prime Directive actively, some of them being imprisoned for the cause, but Ibis no longer associates with any of them, even if she sympathizes. She considers the uphill battle of changing the standing policy to be the best she can do while pursuing a legitimate career. Before returning to the Nimitz from her internship, she spent two more months traveling, including visits to Andoria, Trill, and a memorable return to her birthplanet, Betazed. Thanks to an overdose slipped into a drink when she got mixed up in trying to blow the whistle on a drugs trafficker, Ibis was disabled, unable to control her telepathy as the drug stripped her of a natural hormone that regulates Betazoid telepathy. In order for her to continue without the onslaught of indiscriminately reading all the minds in range, for a time this was instead artificially regulated by suppressants which left her without any access to her gift. She struggled with mild depression during this episode. ((below notes not in the official file: )) The Nimitz crew was transferred to a top secret project, the USS Sojourner, fitted with a slipstream drive. Ibis was assigned as well. The Sojourner discovered and explored a planet, Etraenna, with unusual qualities including a strange time differential on the surface from which the away team experienced more time in passing than the Crew in orbit. The same source of the time differential also adversely affected technology, causing the away team shuttle to crash land and introducing them to a seemingly pre-warp civilization. Strange prophecies in their religion and records detailed the arrival of the away team, but also seemed to indicate an influence on the culture's development. The records even included an herbal remedy which allowed Ibis' hormones to re-balance and enable her to function telepathically once more. When enemies bent on conquering the planet arrived later on and attempted to take the source of the strange affects for their own nefarious empire building purposes, four of the away team members, including Ibis, were transported by the source into the past. There they were selected and empowered by this alien technology to turn a desolate world into a hospitable one for the early natives the source's creators had intended to support. At first the transported starfleet away team members cooperated out of self survival interests, but as they discovered the scope of their supernatural powers and the need for action as well as the long separation from their lives as officers, they began to act in concert with the desires of the source to terraform the wastelands. Once the source was satisfied with their progress, it permitted the lost officers to discover and use a method to return to their own time, but one (Ibis' mentor and friend, Talil) chose to remain and live out her life in the past. Complications with predestination could have landed them all in hot water, except for the general forgiveness of the matter by Captain Diaz, who didn't really want to deal with the paperwork and left a lot of the details off the record. Ibis lived 2 years in the past as a near deity (creating flora and fauna) and has tried to readjust to 24th century life in Starfleet and accept keeping her past in the past. This experience has affected her profoundly. Although she continues to be merry at heart, she has gained an air of maturity and a better sense of her surroundings. |
